What do universities get wrong when rejecting job applicants?

I’ve moved to a new blog but for a while I’m still going to post links to my posts here. As anybody who’s tried, is trying, or has succeeded in getting a permanent job knows the process is often a long and hard one with many rejections before finally securing a position. The situation is only getting worse as the number of people with PhDs rises and the number of jobs doesn’t. Getting a rejection letter is never pleasant but in my experience a lot of universities handle the way they reject people very badly and make things more painful than they need to be. Here are my thoughts on how they could do things differently:
